Post Three from the Taipei Cycle Show ...

Long days on the floor working and long nights posting some cool things for you all to enjoy.

FUNN BRAKES

Funn has been working on improving modulation on their brakes, resulting in improved feel. With all production of their brakes done in house they have complete control over their product.

Release from FUNN:

The comfort of the lever under "one finger braking" is loads better, with it being wider and more molded around the finger joint it has a lot more comfort under hard braking. It also allows you to pull harder therefore brake harder. You don't have to pull as hard on the lever to achieve the same power as the old ones which are going to be great for longer tracks for reducing arm pump and I hope reduce the heat on the pads and the transfer of that heat to the caliper. Also with the new adjustment you can set the lever closer to the bar with the bite point still in the right place, which again will reduce arm pump and you can also have the lever in a position where you can pull it more efficiently. I think you will like the bend in the lever; when the brake is on, the lever is parallel to the bar so feels real nice.

KALI PROTECTIVES

Kali has recently released the new Avatar full face helmet. With a published weight of 849 grams it might be the lightest full face on the market. It is the lightest full face that I found at the show. Like all Kali helmets it is composite fused, which means that the shell and foam are one piece.

BEAR'S BIKE

Ben at Bear's has been working on a couple of different hubs. The first is a fixed gear hub which can be switched to a regular hub by pulling and pushing on a flange. He has also been working on making it possible to run left side drive with a disk brake.

He has also been working on complete fixed gear bikes.

BMX SHOW: They put on a little show every year here at the Taipei show. The riders this year are from Thailand, Korea, Taiwan ... there were a couple of westerners, sorry guys I can not remember where you were from.

I was riding around on a scooter for a lot of this afternoon. Scooters are a good way to pick up girls. This should make up for lack of technical information.

I'm glad they used carbon fibre on the housing for those huge batteries on the 'Go Clean' bikes - could reduce the weight from 58 pounds down to 57.2 pounds.

'Go Clean' - yeah right. It might be better than a car, but the production and disposal of batteries is about as environmentally friendly as a whale-blubber powered Hummer.

Yeah Vancouver would be awesome for a Bike Show,
There is a brand new convention center which was being used as the media hub over the Olympics.
I can understand why Vegas and Taipei has a bike show but surely Vancouver would be a place where Raceface, Norco, Knolly, Staritline and all the other Canadian based companies could show off there gear locally!
Just my 2 bobs worth.

35th pic is the dumbest CHAIN idea, its a Snowmobile like RUBBER strap instead of a chain, rubber is not realy rigit when it comes to acceleration with a bike! so, why ask : why is a bike chain outtof metal, because rubber isnt made for the use of bike chains. durr! lols,

sure but a snowmobile's a snowmobile and a bike will be a bike, so its not the same at all, and a strap or a chain same diff who cares, id rather have a chain, it wont cost me so much of changing "straps" than changing chains, cause ya dont change a chain on a bike very often.

if your talking about the nicolia(sp?) its carbon/ruber, so much like the surpenteen belt on your car. only problem i see is there is no way to adapt it to a different frame. once thats sorted id surely run it tup

Im assuming the belt has steel wires running through it just like a car or snowmobile belt does. That is why there is no stetch, trust me they are very ridged.

from what i can tell from my buddies shredded sled track(dont ask how ill laugh too hard type) its got rubber with steel strands running parallel with the track. i would assume they use carbon in this one because of the need to shed weight on the bicycle

no need for steel- carbon is super stiff and doesn't flex. The downside is
A. no changing the length for different stay lengths/gear ratios
B. the belt is one solid piece- you have to have a break in your frame to mount it. No more flex-free rear ends!
C. chain can bend more- to accommodate smaller sprockets.

i know that, if they could make the belt so that you dont have to run split rear triangle to get it on and off would make it even better. dont see it catching on for street/park unless they can make everything smaller but for dedicated dj 4x and ds bikes it will take off. i mainly like the no 150 dollar dérailleur to get eaten by my wheel every time i land a jump funny. as soon as it can be run on a regular frame im in until then ill stick to killing dérailleurs

So... the new Funn brakes copy the Avid lever, and the old hayes caliper- but lack the pressurization capability (the only strong point of hayes calipers) of a tooling-surface on the caliper bleed plug? WTF?
And a carbon priced brake with a single bolt lever? Who designed this shit?

Who asked for a left-side-drive + disk break option. Apart from no one being interested, I wouldn't consider it too intelligent to have one's disc next to the lubed chain....

my guess is that some park or street riders will be interested in the left side drive disk brake thing. Bear's sponsors a lot of the best Asian riders and it is something that they have asked for.
